Yorkshire Sculpture Park
We are delighted to announce that Beyond Silence, a digital artwork by Future20 Collective members SAF-S2E, Jahday Ford and Melissa Sorrell, in collaboration with Ivan Morison, will be on display at the boathouse at Yorkshire Sculpture Park throughout April.
Beyond Silence reimagines Heather Peak and Ivan Morison’s sculptural installation Silence – Alone in a World of Wounds, which was commissioned by the Oak Project and opened at YSP in June 2021.
Beyond Silence was launched online in October 2021 with a live premiere and special conversation between the artists and Clare Lilley, Director of Programme at YSP – available to watch here. This is the first time the work will be screened in a gallery setting.
While Silence invites visitors to be quiet in the space, the sculpture also asks audiences to spend time listening and focusing on the surrounding natural environment. SAF-S2E, Ford, Sorrell used this idea as inspiration to produce Beyond Silence, a digital work comprised of onsite field recordings, captured sounds, moving images and spoken word.
The group spent time together onsite after hours, between dusk and dawn to capture this usually unseen moment of time at the Park. The final outcome is an interpretative expression of the work Silence seen through the collective’s individual practices, which includes poetry, glass blowing, ceramics, textiles, filmmaking, photography and performance.
